What Is Depression?

Depression and depressive disease or depressive disorder are considered mood disorder which causes the individual to experience emotions of sadness, disinterest and often lethargy. This has a significant and debilitating effect on how someone thinks, feels, behaves, and interacts with the world around them. This can be so profound that even day-to-day tasks become overwhelming and ideas of suicide creep into our thoughts as if we should just give up on life. 

Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, it is also treatable. Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed. What Are Symptoms Of Depression

Types Of Depression

Symptoms caused by major depression can vary from person to person. A specifier means that you have depression with specific features, such as:

  • Anxious Distress — depression with unusual restlessness or worry about possible events or loss of control
  • Mixed Features — simultaneous depression and mania, which includes elevated self-esteem, talking too much and increased energy
  • Melancholic Features — severe depression with lack of response to something that used to bring pleasure and associated with early morning awakening, worsened mood in the morning, major changes in appetite, and feelings of guilt, agitation or sluggishness

  • Psychotic Features — depression accompanied by delusions or hallucinations, which may involve personal inadequacy or other negative themes

  • Peripartum Onset — a depression that occurs during pregnancy or in the weeks or months after delivery (postpartum)
  • Seasonal Pattern — depression related to changes in seasons and reduced exposure to sunlight
